Add Colourful Tiles to Your Exterior Design

An uplifting atmosphere in your garden can be incredibly important during times of difficulty. It is vital that you have a space where you can relax if you want to maintain a positive attitude throughout these difficult times. Plants are shown to be good for helping humans to relax, and so it is fairly common for individuals to retreat into their gardens to destress.

In this guide, we’re going to offer some tips on how to make your garden appear bold, beautiful and refreshing. We think that installing some beautifully patterned and colourful tiles will help your garden to maintain a sense of joy, even on dark days. Read on to find out our recommendations:

Turkish Tiles

Many of our porcelain tiles collection draw their inspiration from Turkish designs. They are a breath of fresh air in any home, but we think that they would look superb in most gardens, too.

A typical Turkish tile will feature an ornate pattern etched with strong colours, often a deep blue or purple on a white background. Patterns are often kaleidoscopic – meaning they feature a complex section of a pattern that is mirrored across vertical and horizontal axis.

Each pattern has a unique style, but their regularly bold designs mean that they are very eye catching and can easily overshadow other aspects of your garden. If you are thinking about incorporating tiles that are inspired by Turkish designs, then you may want to consider creating a feature wall where these tiles will be able to stand out without seeming like they are fighting for attention.

Placing these beautiful artistic tiles behind a water feature can emphasise the beauty of the instalment. Alternatively, lining these tiles along raised plant beds can elevate your garden to new heights of sophistication.

Here are some of our own tiles that have been inspired by Turkey’s love for happy colours and intricate patterning:

Spanish Inspiration

Gaudi was an artistically gifted Spaniard who gifted Lisbon with a brilliant outdoor park that shows how manmade tiles can elevate outdoor spaces into places of great beauty. Gaudi used a wide array of colour and often organised his mosaics in a manner that replicated the rainbow. The colour, reflectivity, shape and size of the tiles that Gaudi used were carefully chosen to create Park Guell – a Spanish national treasure.

Whilst recreating Park Guell in your own garden might be considered a bold move by your neighbours, it might be easier and more effective to be inspired by Park Guell’s creativity and love for colour. Installing some mosaics of your own around the garden will help to create colour and diversity in your space.

Creating Movement

A garden with a bit of movement may also improve the atmosphere. There are many ways to create movement in a garden, but a water feature is one of the most favourable. As well as creating a drinking place to encourage bird life in your garden, a water feature generates gentle sound alongside its waterflow.

If you’re adding a water feature to your garden, you’ll want to use our outdoor anti slip tiles to improve your safety.

Alternatives to water features include installing a few trees, although you’ll want to be careful not to block all the sun from your garden. If you have a small garden, an alternative might be to carefully manage tall flowers that will bloom throughout the seasons.

If you have the space, you might also want to think about an outdoor swing chair. These seats will swing amicably in the breeze, but they also create a new place for you to lounge on and admire your garden.

Thinking About Sound

A garden should be a full sensory experience to achieve the best effects. Whilst flowers and plants will scent the air, you can also affect the sound of your garden. Depending on your preferences, you may find a few wind charms to be quite relaxing. Alternatively, you could encourage the local wildlife by installing some bird houses. Watching the birds during a break can prove to be quite entertaining, and they will certainly add to the soundscape of your garden.
